…by the famous artist Wouter Troostwijk
Painted in the year preceding his early death at 28, this oil on canvas by the Dutch painter Wouter Troostwijk (1782-1810) depicts Amsterdam in winter. There’s a quiet beauty to this somber, snow and ice-filled landscape with a sky full of smoky haze from the numerous chimneys in the town. Few people are about further illustrating the coldness of the winter day. The setting overlooks the canal, a bridge over the canal and the streets above. Houses line the canal’s waters and a church steeple is almost hidden by all of the chimney smoke.
