Landscape painting of life in a northern Russian village as depicted by the famous Russian painter Abram Arkipov (1862-1930).
Arkipov often depicted how difficult life was for Russian woman and this painting is no exception.
Here we see three women at the rivers edge gathering water or washing something in the water.
The countryside is made up of dull browns and greens with the only bright colors used in the dresses of the women. He shows how hard their life is and yet by making their dresses the brightest part of the landscape somehow manages to convey the beauty and strength of the women.
Their homes look like they are barely standing up and the row boat is on the opposite side of the waterway which only adds to the overall feeling of a place that is struggling to survive.
