A wonderful painting of the port at Rotterdam showing the sun either rising or setting. Johann Jongkind (1818-1891) spent much of his professional life studying the effects of sunlight on the landscape and this painting of the Dutch port complete with a windmill in the background provides a beautiful light-filled sky which reflects on the water below. The painting includes lots of details like, trees backlit by the sun, a large Dutch windmill, a variety of boats and sailing ships and even a pedestrian bridge with a pair of gaslights. Like almost all of his paintings, Jongkind both signed and dated it, so we know he painted this picture in 1854.
