…by the famous artist Johann Jongkind
Painted in 1889 by the famous Dutch artist Johann Jongkind (1818-1891), this landscape watercolor painting depicts two farmers talking over a pasture fence while a pair of hitched bulls stand between them. The painting was done with watercolors, gouache and charcoal on paper. Jongkind often “drew” sketches in watercolors to later be recreated in oils. I couldn’t find any reference to this watercolor becoming a full oil painting but like many of Jongkind’s watercolor sketches and oil paintings, this one shows his great fascination with natural light and how it played on the natural landscape.
