Dutch artist Johann Jongkind (1818-1891) often painted landscapes and marine scenes from his native country and France. In this painting he has shared his interpretation of Rouen – this historical capital city of Normandy. This painting depicts a variety of sailing ships and small boats making their way on the River Seine. Jongkind’s paintings are most recognizable by the careful attention he pays to natural light and how it creates reflections on the water and the objects he sees.
