This painting by the Swiss painter Konrad Witz shows St. Catherine and Mary Magdalene inside what appears to be a chapel. Witz obviously put a lot of effort into the folds of each women’s dresses – perhaps going a bit too far but it does provide a great example how painters were changing how they depicted the human form in the years leading up to the Renaissance. I did not find much commentary about this painting but assume by it’s central placement that the golden wheel positioned between the two women has great significance.
